Gender Affirming Care PEI is not a medical clinic and does not provide medical advice. As a registered non-profit, however, we work closely with Health PEI's Gender Affirming Clinic at the Sherwood Medical Centre in Charlottetown.
Gender Affirming Care PEI assists with navigating the PEI healthcare system, clarifying how Islanders can access gender-affirming care and what care options are available.

Where can I access mental health counselling from an affirming provider who is knowledgeable about trans mental health?
Our Landing Place is a collective of 2SLGBTQIA+-identified counsellors who provide inclusive, trans- and queer-affirming therapy. A funding-assistance program is available for qualified PEI residents.

How do I apply for gender-affirming surgery (GAS)?
If you have a PEI health card, you can apply through your primary care provider. You must complete a Health PEI form called the Gender Confirming Surgery Prior Approval Request Form.
If you do not have a primary care provider, you may self-refer to Health PEI's Gender Affirming Clinic by emailing GAC@ihis.org or calling (902) 288-1850.

I am new to PEI. How can I access hormone therapy? Can it be funded under PEI Medicare?
You must have a Prince Edward Island Health Card to access insurable health services through PEI Medicare.
You can find more information and apply online for your PEI Health Card on the Government of PEI website. Your coverage begins after 90 days of residency. If you need to refill your prescription prior to qualifying for your PEI Health Card, contact your care provider in your previous province of residence.
Primary care providers can assess hormone readiness and prescribe and refill prescriptions for hormone therapy. If you do not have a primary care provider, you may self-refer to Health PEI’s Gender Affirming Clinic at the Sherwood Medical Centre by email at GAC@ihis.org or phone at (902) 288-1850.
Hormone therapy is insured under existing pharma-care programs offered by the Prince Edward Island government. You can find more information on the Health PEI Website. You may apply for your hormone therapy to be funded by PEI Medicare by completing a Gender Affirming Procedures Prior Approval Request Form.
What gender-affirming services are covered in the province of PEI?
Health PEI uses the World Professional Association for Transgender Health's Standards of Care for guidance on health services which are medically indicated (medically necessary for the health and well-being of trans and gender-divergent people).
